Free Online seminar - Dark Events: A New direction in events research?

The School of Hospitality and Tourism Management, University of Surrey (UK) and the Faculty of Tourism Studies - Turistica, University of Primorska (Slovenia), are jointly hosting a series of three online seminars on the theme of ‘Events: Conflict and Contestation’.

The third of these online seminars will be on the 12th June, from 18.00 - 20.00 (Slovenia time) | from 17.00-19.00 UK Time (GMT), on the topic of ‘Dark Events’ – events linked to death, tragedy and suffering.

This is a relatively new area of research that we hope will appeal to those interested  in events and also to those interested in dark tourism and dark leisure. The seminar will feature four research presentations and will conclude with a discussion of the concept of dark events and its value for the future of events research.

  • Dr Oksana Shyber  (Kyiv National University of Culture & Arts): Mobilising the Events Industry in times of conflict: examples from the Ukraine
  • Professor Brent McKenzie (University of Guelph, Canada): Shades of Dark Tourism: The Case of Bermuda
  • Associate Professor Demet Genceli (Yeditepe University, Turkey): Dark Tourism and Dark Gastronomy - Beyond the History
  • Associate Lecturer Zhenni Wu (University of Surrey, UK): The Impact of Past Film Viewing Experience on Dark Tourism: A Case of Titanic Belfast, UK
