ABOUT

The World Tourism Day 2021 is dedicated to topic of Tourism for Inclusive Growth; which celebrates “tourism’s unique ability to ensure that nobody is left behind as the world begins to open up again and look to the future” (UNWTO, 2021). This UNWTO statement inevitably calls for future tourism to genuinely become sustainable and our online panel will elaborate how academia can help achieving inclusive sustainable tourism; through the lens of international collaboration.

The future of tourism and its role in inclusive and sustainable growth heavily depends on what we know about the tourism, its driving forces and impacts. It is generally accepted that knowledge should be a driving force of any development, and that academia is responsible for such knowledge development. Knowledge must be universal (generalizable); hence, useful in every corner of the world. Although academics aim at visible contribution to tourism knowledge development, their success depends on the quality of their academic environment. Unfortunately, the quality the environment needed for knowledge development varies substantially around the globe which puts academic institutions and academics in a challenging position. International networking appears to be one of the most effective approaches for levelling out the many differences in the quality of the academic environment globally; thus, providing equal opportunities for academics to meaningfully contribute to tourism knowledge development.

This webinar will highlight our current standing on tourism knowledge and point out the key steps academia and tourism industry must take, to ensure more inclusive and sustainable tourism. It will highlight the approaches, barriers, advantages and threats of international academic networking as one of the most promising ways for credible tourism knowledge development. By so doing this webinar will serve as a starting point for future 1) systematic international academic networking aimed at developing the best scientific and practical knowledge, 2) provision of equal opportunities for academic growth of individual researchers as well as their academic institutions and 3) uptake of credible theory-based tourism knowledge by the tourism industry.

The webinar will host:

  • Sara DOLNIČAR (The University of Queensland, AUS; ARC Laureate fellow, IAST member).
  • Elizabeth INESON (Manchester Metropolitan University, UK; EURO CHRIE)
  • Miroslav VUJIČIĆ (University of Novi Sad, RS)
  • James KENNELL (Greenwich University, UK)
  • Sangwon PARK (Kyung Hee University, KR)

The webinar will be hosted on Zoom and broadcasted via Youtube on the link here:
