SMARTDEST: Cities as mobility hubs

Cities as mobility hubs: tackling social exclusion through ‘smart’ citizen engagement

The SMARTDEST Research Project, funded by the renowned scientific program HORIZON 2020, runs between January 2020 and December 2022. It includes 12 academic partners from 7 EU countries, including the University of Primorska, Faculty of Tourism Studies - Turistica.

The goal of the SMARTDEST project is to generate new knowledge in the field of tourism mobility impact on urban inclusion and population connectivity and to research, design and test innovative solutions to reduce social exclusion. In seeking solutions, the project shall first of all focus on the cooperation, co-creation and involvement of the local population in tourism processes.

In eight European cities the SMARTDEST partners are already studying in-depth the processes, causes and effects, associated with increasing mobility and penetration of tourists into the daily lives of local people, which can lead to the social exclusion of individual urban communities.

The project includes four large-scale research packages: (1) impact analysis of tourism mobility, temporary residence, and smart systems; (2) an examination of social exclusion mechanisms and practices for managing them; (3) development of city laboratories, i.e. "CityLabs", or forums for collaboration solution design; (4) transferring insights and knowledge gained in the project to local communities, political bodies.
