Portorož, 1 June 2020 – As of today, the Faculty of Tourism Studies - Turistica, University of Primorska, has a new Dean, assist. prof. Marijana Sikošek. Due to the current situation related to the epidemic, she will receive the Dean's honours and duties from the former Dean, assoc. prof. Janez Mekinc, within the inner circle of the university management.
After the publication of the call in November 2019, prof. Sikošek was nominated for the position of dean by her Department for Sustainable Destination Development and the Student Council of UP FTŠ Turistica. In the presentation of her work during her mandate, she emphasized as an advantage of her candidacy the fact that she knows very well the work of both the faculty and the university, as she has been working in the faculty bodies for the last ten years and in the university ones for the last three. She also got to know the work of administrative services and the pedagogical and scientific-research sphere in her almost twenty years of experience working at the faculty. The Electoral Committee accepted the candidacy and was supported by her colleagues and students in the March elections.
“The goal of Turistica is to remain the leading higher education institution in the field of tourism in Slovenia, which shall educate for the needs of the tourism industry” stated prof. Sikošek in her plan of action and added that for this purpose, it is necessary to update study programs and learning contents in accordance with the development trends in the professional field, science and pedagogical field, and to take care of the ongoing evaluation of the implementation. The emphasis shall also be placed on good planning of scientific research, project and international cooperation and internationalization. “The concern of the modern University and the Faculty is the effort to integrate its activities into international study, student and scientific research flows.” said the new Dean of Turistica. At the same time, she emphasizes that cooperation with the local environment, in which Turistica initiated, is an opportunity to strengthen mutual relations. She took over the management of Turistica for a term of four years.
Dr. Marijana Sikošek holds a PhD from the UP Faculty of Management and has also been participating in the management of the faculty in recent years, as the vice-dean for student affairs and a member of the close dean's team. In fulfilling the dean's honours and duties, she will be guided by the motto: "Cum grano salis" (“with a grain of salt”), which links the Mediterranean environment and the wisdom of the university space
