Turistica Students Explore Regenerative Tourism Practices through Fieldwork

As part of the PUŠ – Data Ecosystems for the Development of Regenerative Tourism project, students of the University of Primorska, Faculty of Tourism Studies Turistica carried out fieldwork with various tourism providers in the Portorož & Piran destination and the wider Istrian hinterland. The aim of the fieldwork was to gain insight into concrete examples of regenerative tourism practices, identify their positive impacts on the local environment and community, and explore opportunities for the further development of regenerative tourism within the destination.

Students visited Portorož Airport, the Dragonja Collection Centre, Tonina House in Sveti Peter, a rainwater harvesting facility, Residence Gold Istra, the Medljan Farm, Lepa Vida Thalasso Spa, and Magazin Grando in Portorož. Through discussions with local providers, site visits, and hands-on learning, students explored how different stakeholders are already integrating sustainable and regenerative approaches into their operations, while also identifying new opportunities for future development.

The fieldwork provided students with direct contact with the local environment, a deeper understanding of the destination’s challenges and potential, and an opportunity to connect theoretical knowledge with practical experience. Special emphasis was placed on understanding the impact of tourism on the local community, environment, and heritage, as well as on identifying solutions that contribute to forms of tourism that give back more to the environment and community than they take.

As part of the project, a video was also produced showcasing highlights from the fieldwork, collaboration with local providers, and examples of good regenerative tourism practices within the destination.
